Whatcha growing?

5 days in and our garden is still alive. Yes! I have not killed it... Better yet? It is thriving!

Look at those tiny, baby peppers!

AND the strawberry plants are exploding. When we planted them they were just bare roots!

I have received questions about what we have decided to grow this year.

This year, so far, we have planted...

Carrots
Green Beans
Kale
Lettuce
Peas
Peppers, Ancho
Peppers, Bell
Peppers, Fresno
Peppers, Jalapeno...we like peppers....
Radish
Squash, Zucchini
Squash, Summer
Strawberries
Swiss Chard
Tomatoes, Early Girl
Tomatoes, Cherry

We also have some seedlings started inside of the house that will go out in the next few weeks...

Basil (2 types)
Broccoli Rabe
Brussel Sprouts
Leeks
Oregano
Parsley
Peppers, Mini Bell (This may or may not happen. I planted the seeds I took from a store bought mini bell pepper.)

I have a section in my Happy Planner for my garden info! You really can customize it to work for EVERYTHING in your life. Try paper planning people...

You can find my Happy Planner Gardening inserts here!

Our 2016 Garden is in!

After many hours of planning and dirt slinging my garden is in! I will still be adding more as my seedlings grow, BUT the bulk of my plants are in! Yay!

Saturday morning, my husband and father-in-law dumped a whole yard of dirt in the back yard. The kids and I had a blast filling all the beds and pots.

Once the littles couldn't take anymore, it was naps for them and planting for Kierstyn and I.

I have to say it was a million times more fun and efficient with her by my side. She has decided that she is going to name them ALL and that they are her babies. I love her. I hope she continues to show an interest.

Once everything was planted a final layer of mulch and a fence completed our garden! We are excited to see how it grows. The kids ask every few hours to go outside to "check it out."

Here is our BEFORE...

and our AFTER...

I made a couple inserts for my Happy Planner to plan and record the happenings of my garden. I loved the Garden Insert with the dots so I could easily draw the boxes for my garden beds!

or for those who would prefer more clean, dot-less page...

Please note... You will need a .PDF Reader - you can get one here for FREE.

This insert is designed to print on a full "8.5by11" sheet of paper and then TRIMMED TO FIT your planner.

Make sure to print them in "actual size" so they fit perfectly in your planner! After printing, you will simply need to trim down the excess on the sides so that it measures to The Happy Planner size of 7" x 9.25".

Adventures in Gardening

One of the items on my 36 before 36 is to "grow something." Haven't read my 36 Before 36 post? You can find it here.

This week we are prepping to do just that. Last night, the kids and I cleaned out plastic containers that we will be planting in. They thought it was loads of fun and I am all about the free kid labor.

After they went to bed I started working on the garden bed. I normally would allow them to help with this, BUT there was a broken pot in the bed and I didn't want to run the risk of them cutting their little fingers. There will be plenty of time and dirt for them to play with in the near future.

The gardening session was eventful. The bed looks loads better! I also got my hands dirty, acquired a blister, and was bit by some kind of bug. Urg...

Even with those three annoyances, I really enjoyed working in the garden. It was so peaceful listening to Glee radio on Pandora, (yeah don't judge me...)  with a cool breeze working its way through the trees. I was even sore this morning! Gardening is hard work!

I am excited to see if I can turn my black thumb green!

I decided to keep a gardening journal. It will reside inside of my trusty Happy Planner. I wanted to keep a gardening journal for two reasons...

1. Posterity! If this is the ONE and ONLY garden we ever attempt I want to remember it!
2. OR if by some miracle we are successful and LOVE gardening we can use this journal to learn from our mistakes or remember what we did well.

I hope it is reason number 2!

Let me know if you like this "gardening journal" insert I made for my Happy Planner. I used the dot grid journal as the base because I knew I would need the boxes to plan out where plants would go in the garden bed. If you like it I will make it available in a future gardening post.

Are you growing a garden this summer? GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR TIPS! I know I am going to need them!

Happy Planner Freebie - Harry Potter Dot Grid Insert

Are you guys ready? I am about to get all NERD on you.

A HUGE part of getting healthy is planning. Being proactive in planning meals ahead of time, meal prepping, and scheduling gym time is huge!

To stay organized with the everything, work, home, kids, businesses, and my fitness journey I use a Happy Planner. What? A paper planner? Yes... a paper planner. It has changed my life.

I have used electronic calendars in the past. Well, attempted to use them. I was never consistent. I hadn't used a paper planner since high school, BUT thought hey I will give it a try. I LOVE it...

For the most part I LOVE my Happy Planner. The only issue I was having was that my to-do list can be miles long, and I didn't like the clutter it caused in my Happy Planner.

Another thing that contributed to my Happy Planner woes was my habit tracking. I track habits. Lots of habits. The same ones over and over again. Writing them down everyday made my happy planner look like my pen puked all over it. No likey. That is the OCD in me coming out.

My solution? A marriage between my Happy Planner and a bullet journal.

I love bullet journals. I think they are pretty, and fun. I love that you can customize them to make them work for you. So why not just keep a bullet journal?

Well, I need the future planning functionality of the Happy Planner, more than a year in advance. (Mostly in the process of assisting my Disney clients.) I also like the fact that I don't have to set-up monthly calendars and weekly spreads! It is already done for me in my Happy Planner.

Can you see my dilemma?

SOOOOO... I made an insert. A dot grid insert that I place in between the two sides of my weekly Happy Planner spread.

They are Harry Potter themed because well I LOVE Harry Potter. Plus, they look great with my Harry Potter Daily Insert. You can find it here.

I make a monthly habit tracker and then start right in with my daily spreads. This is where I add my sometimes long to-do lists. Score!

I have achieved planner peace! Yay!

If you want to try and give a Happy Planner bujo a try, here are my Harry Potter themed dot grid inserts!

...because Harry Potter is forever!

AND...because we ALL need to manage a little mischief!

5 Thoughts Friday 5-6-2016

1. Do you remember getting excited in elementary school to use a new box of crayons? I felt the same excitement yesterday when I received my new Staedtler pens from my best friend Amazon. My planner and bullet journal are going to be so pretty. I am so excited! To all my planner/bullet journal friends, buy this set from Amazon, NOT Michaels. Even with a 40% off coupon it was still cheaper on Amazon!

2. I am on day 5 of Hal Elrod's "Miracle Morning" challenge and let me tell you. Today was ROUGH. My only saving grace is that I have to physically get out of bed to get to my alarm. I highly recommend this book though! I just might turn myself into a morning person yet!

3. Instant Pot. I dropped some hints to my husband that I wanted one for Mother's Day. I hope he gets it for me. I know it is probably weird to some people that I want a pressure cooker for Mother's Day, BUT I love all things that will make my life easier. I can even use it for canning! Note to self: Learn how to can. Stay tuned...

4. I've started logging my 36 before 36 goals. Nothing fancy, BUT I like it! I think I was a little lofty in my goal setting.

5. Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT post on your blog when you are on Nyquil. You just might come up with a title like "Mommy's Food Belly." What was I thinking? Oh wait...right. I wasn't.

Happy Friday!

36 before 36

My birthday is in 76 days! I will be 36! Urg... I can't believe I just told you all that, BUT I guess you could find out anyway with those weird and creepy "free" background checks if you were really that interested!

Once you hit a certain age, birthdays just aren't as fun anymore. This year will be different!

After a couple heavy and somewhat discouraging posts this week and last, I decided today that I wanted to write something fun! Below I compiled a list of things I want to accomplish before my 36th birthday in July.

Some of the items below are fun and something to look forward to, while others are a little out of my comfort zone and will need to be tackled.

1. Complete C25K program.
2. Lose 36 pounds.
3. Sign up for first 5k.
4. Run first 5k.
5. Go camping.
6. Go back to where it all began. A trip to Chicago is in order!
7. Catch up on my weather crochet blanket. I'm pretty sure I haven't worked on it since January when I started it.
8. Have 36 total days where my habit tracker is completely colored in.
9. Take a yoga class. I'm petrified to do this.
10. Lose 36 inches from my body.
11. Take a family portrait.
12. Take a creative class.
13. Go to the drive-in.
14. 36 consecutive miracle mornings.
15. Mail 36 handwritten notes.
16. Read or listen to four non-fiction books. Preferably non-fiction but I WILL make an exception for Harry Potter. Can I get an Amen?
17. Start C210K program.
18. Plan a kidless weekend with the hubs.
19. Be able to run for 36 minutes straight.
20. Take 36 selfies. (This one will probably be the hardest for me. I really don't like being in photos.)
21. Post 36 selfies. (Pretty much tied with the level of "hard" in number 12. Might be worse.)
22. 36 lunch hour walks.
23. Go to a farmers market.
24. Write in my journal every day.
25. Go on a picnic.
26. Jog on the beach.
27. Sign up for a half marathon to run in 2017.
28. Sign up for a 10K to run before November.
29. Family walks twice a week.
30. Build a sand castle.
31. Participate in a social media detox.
32. Sit at a coffee shop alone.
33. Visit a city I've never been to before.
34. Finally finish organizing and decorating our master bedroom.
35. Write down 3 things everyday that I'm grateful for.
36. Grow something. (This will be tough. I have only successfully grown my babies, and that pretty much worked on auto pilot.)

Phew. It will be a BUSY but AMAZING 75 days. Have you ever tried this? I must say, it was pretty fun to write up!

April Recap and May Goals

It has been a couple difficult posts for me. First last Friday with "Mommy's Food Belly" and now today with this post.

I lost 0 pounds in April, in fact I managed to gain +6.2! (Insert cheesy game show loser music...) I know exactly what I did wrong. Inconsistency killed my game. I did not follow through with any of my habits... water, calorie counting, steps, gym days. I am pretty sure there wasn't a single day last month where I could mark off every box on my habit tracker.

It is so hard to stay positive when you have a bad month. I tend to be a somewhat negative Nelly. I awfulize everything. My little mind is telling me, "See told you. You can't do this." Set backs make me quit. BUT...

It is a new month! So what am I going to do about it? I'll take "Gaining Motivation, NOT Weight" for $1000 Alex!

I am going to be more intentional, and not get comfortable. I worked so hard for those 6.2 pounds and BAM, my food baby is chubbier in just one month!

Goals for the month...
  1. Get back on track with my habits. I want a habit tracker that is completely filled in!
  2. Start C25K. (Couch to 5K) I would love to be a runner. They are just cool so cool with their fanny packs and awesome head bands. Oh and the shirts! I love running skirts!
  3. STOP the weekend calorie free-for-alls.
  4. Back to the basics. Steps, lots of steps. Water, gallons of water.
  5. Positive weight loss affirmations. These will become my mantra for this month.
    • I am stronger than any excuse.
    • My body burns fat like a furnace.
    • I have nonstop daily determination to reach my healthy weight.
Let's do this.
