Happy Planner FREEBIE - Harry Potter Monthly Tracker August 2016

A habit by definition is a "settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up."

Just like bad habits, good habits are learned by practice. Some habits are harder to automate than others. For me, personal care habits are the hardest to conquer, BUT I have learned that if I don't care of myself, I will not be the mommy or wife my kids and husband deserve. I am sure many of you can relate!

My monthly tracker is helping me build good habits and we ALL know that I need ALL the help that I can get!

Habit tracking encourages me to build time into my schedule to complete my list which in turn will hopefully help my new habits "stick."  I don't know about you, BUT I love coloring in my little habit tracker boxes. It makes me happy and motivates me.

SO why not just track habits on my weekly planner spread?

1. I don't like the clutter. There are some months where I am tracking 10 or more habits. My monthly tracker lets me keep my weekly spreads clean(er)!

2. I can see the whole month! Seeing the whole month allows me to track trends and troubleshoot periods of "blank" boxes.

3. Regularity. We ALL know that the more often we practice a habit the greater chance that it will stick around. Seeing my monthly tracker on a daily basis helps! I need the "in your face" reminder!

NOW... I keep my monthly tracker in the bullet journal section of my planner. The premade boxes are perfect for making habit trackers.

For those of you who are not on the bullet journal bandwagon, BUT would still like to try out a monthly tracker, I made an insert for August!

You can use this tracker for anything you want! It doesn't have to be personal care. That is just what I am currently working on. Work, school, blog, etc etc.... anything...

Of course it is Harry Potter themed... I mean who wouldn't love a Harry Potter themed monthly tracker? I want ALL things Harry Potter! I'm ALL ready for August! Let's fill in those boxes!

Mid-Season Garden Update

Can you believe summer is half over? It is crazy how fast it goes!

The garden is thriving and lately I haven't had to do much work to keep it that way! We haven't had the rain I would like, BUT my plants are still doing well with a little extra watering.

The time has FINALLY come for us to harvest some of our bounty! It is so exciting! This is our most recent haul!

My zucchinis are growing like crazy. I have made two batches of zucchini bread, one with chocolate chips and one without, BOTH were delicious.

I also made a zucchini-blueberry cake with lemon frosting. It was amazing! I forgot to take a picture of it. Urg... I have also given away a few and that makes me happy. Sharing is caring after all!

My kale was being attacked by a black bird so I harvested most of it. I used some of it in an Olive Garden, Zuppa Toscana, copycat recipe. It was delicious. The rest I pureed in my Vitamix with a little water for kale smoothie cubes.

The rest I have been randomly using. I used a few jalapenos in guacamole, and some of my green peppers on a homemade pizza!

A huge bag of banana peppers will go to my mom who will stuff them with a blend of Mexican cheeses and grill them at our next family cook-out. I am excited for those!

I even used a handful of random green beans in some chicken and noodles I made over the weekend. I wasn't sure what else to do with just a handful of green beans! Regardless of the amount, garden fresh green beans are phenomenal. A million times better than store bought.

If you are on the fence about growing a garden just do it! It may take a little planning and a little more work in the beginning but the rewards are worth it! I am so happy we took the plunge this year. We will definitely be planting again next spring.

NOW I am just waiting, kinda patiently, for my bigger tomatoes to ripen so I can make sauce!

Happy Planner/Bullet Journaling - Why I Plan to Merge the Two

Bullet journaling has become the new "in" thing. Don't believe me? Check out Pinterest! I have jumped on the bandwagon and I am in love!

I have been asked on several occasions if my bullet journal will become my main planning tool. My answer is ... NOPE. It's not and here are the reasons why.

1. I love premade monthly and weekly spreads. Yes, yes I know that I can make my own in my bullet journal but mannnnn who has time for that? Sometimes I do, but most of the time I don't and KNOW that I won't. It is so easy to use the pre-made spreads in my Happy Planner that I think "why mess with it if it's not broken?"

2. Pretty! I need pretty. The Happy Planners by MAMBI are beautiful. I don't know about you, but I feel more vested when I like something. In other words, I need to be bribed with pretty spreads to stay organized. (Don't judge me!) Now if you look at Pinterest you will see AHMAZING bullet journal spreads with awesome handwriting. In time I could maybe? probably produce "pin" worthy spreads, but again my problem is time. They take time. Time that I sometimes I don't have.

3. Finally, my biggest issue with getting rid of my Happy Planner for a bullet journal is future planning. I'm not a fan of the methods to future plan in a bullet journal. As a travel agent who specializes in Disney destinations, I sometimes plan vacations over a year in advance! I need the future planning that my Happy Planner gives me. There are way too many date sensitive tasks that go into planning a Disney vacation to add to a future log, not to mention the extra steps added to my organizational process.

Instead of adding tasks/important dates right to the appropriate dates in the future and being done, (because the spreads are already made for me) with a bullet journal I would have to add the details to a future log, then transfer them when I'm ready to create the month they fall in. That's an extra step that I don't want OR have time for!

Now. Why don't I just use my Happy Planner and forget about the bullet journal?

1. I love that my bullet journal has the space to create as many lists and trackers as I want! I also don't have to worry about having to transfer uncompleted lists to the next week, or month, because in my bullet journal, my lists have their very own designated pages.

2. The possibilities are endless. While I don't have the time to make all of my own weekly and monthly spreads I love that I can if I want to. The BEST thing about bullet journals is their ability to CUSTOMIZED to meet your needs!

3. I love Ryder Carroll's organizational methodology. I love the symbols and the signifiers he uses in his bullet journal system. (See a video here.) I have also come up with a few of my own! (I will share in a future post...) I even use his system in my Happy Planner!

So why not just carry a Happy Planner AND bullet journal?

4 words...

ONE LIFE, ONE PLANNER.

That is the only rule I hold myself to, well that and "one must not buy too much washi tape..." The 2nd rule is harder to follow. Urg...

I have inserted my Lechtturm1917 into my Happy Planner. You can see how I did here.

I love it, but for 2017 I'm working on a complete melding of the two.... Harry Potter style even. Can you guess what I am going to do? Hmmmm???

Here's a clue... ooooooo

Stay tuned... you might like it!

5 Things to Remember About Bullet Journaling

Starting a bullet journal can be a little intimidating. The internet, especially Pinterest is full of bullet journal inspiration, so much that it can be overwhelming. Don't fear! Take the plunge and remember these 5 things...
  1. You don't need fancy pens or notebooks. Any notebook will do, especially if you are just trying it out!
  2. You don't have to be artistic! Pinterest is FULL of beautiful bullet journaling. Awesome doodles and colorful pages are great, but NOT a requirement. As you continue to bullet journal you will not only develop your very own style but it will be ever evolving!
  3. Bullet journaling is completely customizable! When you first start, yes read the "rules" set forth by Ryder Carroll, the inventor of the bullet journal system. You can find an intro here. Once you understand the original method, throw caution to the wind AND do what works for you!
  4. You don't have to be perfect. I have a problem with perfection. I have been known to tear out entire pages from journals just because I didn't like my handwriting. Yes.. yes... I am one of "those" people. Since I started bullet journaling my need for perfection has lessened (Only a little bit... HA) and now try to focus more on function! I am learning to embrace the imperfections in my journal.
  5. Fun! Don't forget to have fun with your bullet journaling. It is a great way to let your thoughts and ideas flow.
Don't be intimidated! Take the plunge! You will love it!

How To Insert A Leuchtturm1917 Into Your Happy Planner

So it started happening... I knew it would.

I did well for a couple days but then started to forget my bullet journal at home! I would remember my planner but not the journal. FAIL... FAIL... FAIL...

I am not surprised though. I violated my one rule for self organization. One life, one organizational tool. (OR One LIFE, one PLANNER...) Adding a separate bullet journal really disrupted my planner mojo.

My solution? I decided to insert my Leuchtturm1917 INTO my Happy Planner! I know I could easily print dotted "inserts" but I really like the layout, page quality, and look of the Leuchtturm1917 notebook pages, even if they aren't the same size as my Happy Planner! (Hint, hint, Leuchtturm... A 7.25 by 9 size notebook would be wonderful!)

Inserting my Leuchtturm1917 into my Happy Planner was an easy process and so far I LOVE how it turned out!

Want to give it a try? Here are step by step instructions!

1. Take your Leuchtturm1917 to Office Depot (I'm sure other office supply stores do it too!) and have them cut the binding off the notebook. Did you know this was possible? I didn't! It only cost $1.99 and took less than 30 seconds!

2. Evaluate the size of your planner discs to see how much space you are going to have for your Leuchtturm1917.

I ran into a problem here. My Happy Planner is already pretty chubby. I have my month inserts chilling in there all the way to December 2017. I need the future planning.

Soooo... to help with my space dilemma,  while at Office Depot I bought 2 inch discs to replace my 1.75 inch Happy Planner discs. Office Depot has a disc brand called Tul. It is similar to the Arc brand Staples carries.

3. Next use the handy Happy Planner punch on the pages of your newly unbound Leuchtturm1917. Since my Leuchtturm is not the same size as my Happy Planner I measured to make sure there would be equal excess on both sides of the first and last punches. I found that placing the bottom of the pages just inside the white line of the punch produced exactly the spacing I wanted.

4. Finally... insert your bullet journal! I inserted mine right in between the pages of my weekly layout.

I used two MAMBI dividers to section it off. As the weeks roll by I plan on moving the weekly pages to the left, always leaving the bullet journal section in the middle of the current week!

So there you have it! Bullet journal INSIDE your Happy Planner! Easy...

Yay for not forgetting it at home! ONE life, ONE planner! My planner peace has been restored. Phew!

Now for an update! After a couple days I decided that I didn't like the Office Depot Tul Discs. They don't quite slide like the Happy Planner discs! Annoying. So I again transferred my planner back to the original Happy Planner discs and only inserted HALF of the Leuchtturm notebook. When I use up the first half I'll reevaluate or just hope and pray that MAMBI comes out with 2 or 2.5 inch discs. Who's with me?
